Prospect Hill Wins Back-to-Back Overall Grand Champion Titles at 2017 Sallie B. Wheeler/USEF Hunter Breeding National Championship

The East Coast portion of the 2017 Sallie B. Wheeler/USEF Hunter Breeding National Championship took place Saturday, August 26, at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. Judges Christina Schlusemeyer of Wellington Fla., and Meg Schulman of Littleton, Colo., assessed the young hunter prospects and awarded the Overall Grand Champion and East Coast Best Young Horse Champion titles for the second year in a row to Prospect Hill.

Evans-Thomas, Gray, and Redifer Take Top Honors at the Lexington National Horse Show

The Virginia tradition continued at the Virginia Horse Center with the 2017 installment of the Lexington National Horse Show. Held from Wednesday, August 9 through Sunday, August 13, the premiere rated horse show hosted the Virginia Horse Show Association Medal Finals as well as top hunter competition.

Farmers Fight! Texas A&M Wins Coveted Spirit Award at 2017 USEA Intercollegiate Championship

From the start of the 2017 United States Eventing Association (USEA) Intercollegiate Eventing Championship at the Virginia Horse Trials (VHT), the Texas A&M Eventing Team brought 110% to the experience. While the Texas A&M Maroon team ultimately earned fifth place overall out of 21 total teams, the group of eight ‘Aggies’ were awarded the coveted Spirit Award, presented by VHT.

Memorial Ring In Honor of Sandy Gerald Features New KCR Footing

The Hilltop rings project, a loving effort to memorialize former president of the Virginia Horse Shows Association Sandy Gerald, has been completed to debut during the Lexington Spring Series. The Virginia Horse Center has refitted Arena B and the adjacent schooling Arena A with new Kruse Cushion Ride (KCR) footing to improve the showing experience for both horse and rider.

$30,000 Grand Prix Events Take Center Stage at Virginia Horse Center’s Lexington Spring Festival

The Virginia Horse Center is pleased to once again host two premiere grand prix events to capstone the Lexington Spring Festival. The $30,000 Rockbridge Grand Prix on Saturday, April 29th, and the $30,000 George L. Kemper and Berry Claim Victories as Roanoke Valley Horse Show Finds Success in Move to Virginia Horse Center

An impressive crowd of over 1,000 spectators turned out Saturday night to see Virginian Brooke Kemper and her own Classified, a 12-year-old Holsteiner Thoroughbred gelding, take home the win in the $25,000 Grand Prix of Roanoke. The evening class was the highlight of the show that this year found a new home at the Virginia Horse Center.

Virginia Horse Center Holds Successful Fundraising Event at Locust Hill Farm

Community involvement is crucial to the success of the Virginia Horse Center (VHC). This was evident at a recent fundraising event co-hosted by Mrs. Magdelan Bryant and Michael and Karen Crane at Bryant's Locust Hill Farm in Middleburg. Roanoke Valley Horse Show Prepares for 2016 Début at Virginia Horse Center

The historic Roanoke Valley Horse Show show has found a new home in the Virginia Horse Center, and is excited for this year’s competition held from June 20-25, 2016. University of Georgia Crowned 2016 USEA Intercollegiate Champions at Virginia Horse Trials

The Inaugural USEA Intercollegiate Championship came down to a nail-biting finale with the first and second place teams separated by less than a point. It was The University of Georgia (UGA) Red Team who hunkered down this weekend to finish victorious, walking away with the top spot. The Bulldogs won on a combined score of 99.06, advancing ahead of the overnight leaders, Clemson University, on the final day of competition.

Virginia Horse Center to Host 2017 IEA National Finals

The Virginia Horse Center is excited to announce that it will be hosting the 2017 Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) National Finals in Lexington, Virginia April 21-23. IEA Nationals is hosted in different locations each year to allow members to travel to different parts of the country, experience different horses and horse communities, and allow various IEA zones and the teams within them to showcase their horses. Roanoke Valley Horse Show Returns, Moves to Virginia Horse Center

The Roanoke Valley Horse Show will return in 2016, but this time the historic horse show has found a new home in the Virginia Horse Center. The horse show, previously held at the Salem Civic Center, was founded in 1972 and continued for 43 years, but insufficient funding for the charitable show caused the event to be cancelled in 2015. Now, the Virginia Horse Center is thrilled to play a part in bringing back the popular horse show, to be held from June 20-25, 2016.

Virginia Horse Center Receives $50,000 Gift from Trailer Raffle and Generous Supporter Gardy Bloemers

When Donna Martin and the 'VHC Equestriennes' set out to raise money for the Virginia Horse Center through a trailer raffle, they knew that together they could ultimately fundraise at least $35,000 to go directly to the Horse Center. Now, thanks to all of their incredible hard work, a fortunate twist of fate and the great generosity of the raffle winner, it was announced Tuesday that $50,000 would be donated to the Virginia Horse Center as a result of the fundraising efforts.

Virginia Horse Center Trailer Raffle Winner to Be Drawn Tomorrow!

Several months ago a group of dedicated horsewomen came together to take on a large task: selling 500 tickets for a raffle to raise funds for the Virginia Horse Center. Now, with all 500 tickets sold, the "VHC Equestriennes" will be drawing the grand prize winner of a brand-new horse trailer or $15,000 cash at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Virginia Horse Center.

Inaugural Intercollegiate Championship to be Hosted at Virginia Horse Trials in 2016

Since the inception of the United States Eventing Association (USEA) Intercollegiate Program in 2014, 31 colleges and universities have affiliated with the USEA to show their support and involvement. Many of these schools have competed in Collegiate Team Challenges at various Events including Virginia Horse Trials, Chattahoochee Hills, Twin Rivers, ESDCTA New Jersey Horse Trials, University of New Hampshire Horse Trial, Poplar Place Farm and FENCE. There has not been an overall Intercollegiate Championship, until now! The USEA is pleased to announce that the Virginia Horse Trials will host the inaugural USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Team Championship in 2016.

Virginia Horse Trials: Upholding Tradition and a Focus for the Future

On Halloween weekend I took my first trip to the Virginia Horse Trials, anxious to see for myself what everyone had described as a gorgeous venue with a 360-degree view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I intentionally left my camera at home, however, because for the first time in a long time, I would be attending a competition as a rider instead of a photographer.

A conceptual plan to develop youth sports fields at the Virginia Horse Center and a capital improvements plan to address the VHC’s maintenance needs were both approved Monday by the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.

VHC Plans Shuttle to City

It looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The city of Lexington will continue to provide more funding to the Virginia Horse Center through an additional lodging tax. At the same time, in a gesture of reciproc- ity from the horse center, the city could benefit from a new shuttle service provided by the center to transport horse- show participants back and forth to area hotels and the downtown.

Betty Oare Featured in Chronicle of The Horse

"On a sunny day 50 years ago this summer, Betty Oare jumped in her first, and only, grand prix on a grass field in Ohio. The day wasn’t just significant for Oare and Navy Commander, who was a wedding gift from her husband Ernest M. Oare and a consistent winner in the working hunters; it was also the first grand prix in the United States, attracting 10,000 spectators. Betty’s remained an integral part of the sport’s history since that memorable day in Cleveland, and this summer she and Ernie returned to the Chagrin Valley Horse Show (see p. 78) to serve as hunter judges for the same event."

Nicholson Announced as Course Designer for Virginia Horse Trials

Brooke Kemper Claims Victory in $25,000 Rockbridge Grand Prix at Virginia Horse Center

When Brooke Kemper first started showing at the Virginia Horse Center, it was aboard ponies in a ring on top of a hill. The Horse Center did not yet house its large Anderson Coliseum, and Kemper was not yet clearing the five-foot fences that she so easily sails over today. Both Kemper and the Virginia Horse Center have come along way since the childhood days that Kemper fondly recalls spending there.

John Nicholson Named CEO of Virginia Horse Center

The Virginia Horse Center Foundation Board of Directors has ratified John Nicholson as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Virginia Horse Center. Following his highly successful 17-year tenure as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park, Nicholson joined the Virginia Horse Center management team in May 2014, first as a consultant and most recently as the interim CEO, before officially assuming the CEO office.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe Speaks at Virginia Horse Center

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe made his first visit to the Virginia Horse Center on Monday, April 6. McAuliffe arrived by helicopter on Monday afternoon to address a crowd of more than 100 visitors gathered in the Horse Center’s Appomattox Mezzanine overlooking the Anderson Coliseum.

Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors Vote Unanimously in Support of Virginia Horse Center

Lexington, VA - March 25, 2015 - In June 2014, the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of allocating an additional one percent of the local occupancy tax to the Virginia Horse Center (VHC) for a two-year period. On Monday night, March 23, 2015, the Board of Supervisors again unanimously voted in the Virginia Horse Center's favor, this time extending the term of the additional one percent occupancy tax from two years to five years.

AQHA Novice Championship Moves to Virginia Horse Center!

In a major announcement from the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) the Virginia Horse Center (VHC) has officially been awarded the bid for the 2015 AQHA Nutrena East Level 1 (Novice) Championships. The AQHA East Level 1 Championships will make the move from Murfreesboro, Tennessee to Lexington, Virginia for the 2015 edition of the show, to be held September 30 - October 4.

The Virginia Horse Center cleared one hurdle last week in its bid to place in a conservation easement 77.6 percent of the VHC campus, or 445 of 573 acres. The Rockbridge County Economic Development authority gave its approval for the easement, expected to generate $1,980,000 in proceeds from tax credit sales through the Virginia Land Preservation Tax Credit program. If all of the necessary approvals for the easement can be secured, the nearly $2 million that would be gained would be used to pay down the principal of an $11.5 million loan the horse center took out several years ago with the USDA to consolidate the center's various capital debts. Paying down the principal by this amount would lower the annual debt payments on the USDA loan from $604,555 to $501,219.

Trainers compete in dog competition in Lexington

LEXINGTON, VA - LEXINGTON, Va (WSLS 10) - Hundreds of dogs and their handlers competed in the 5th annual Dog Agility Trial in Lexington this weekend. The trial chairman says two clubs hosted the event, the Star City Canine Club and the Dog Owners Club.

This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the Fall Virginia Horse Trials at the Virginia Horse Center, and the event, to be held Fri., Oct. 31 - Sun., Nov. 2, is on track to be one of the biggest competitions to date.
