In the summer of 2014, I had just retired from my role as the executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park, and I was reminded of a story of a confederate soldier in 1865. The solider was getting ready to march home, and after his service, he said, “I still love my country, but I’ll be darned if I’ll ever love another one.” That was the way I felt after 17 years at the Kentucky Horse Park. I said, “I still love the Kentucky Horse Park, but I’ll be darned if I’m ever going to love another one.”
Then I came to Lexington, Virginia, and something changed. I fell in love with the Virginia Horse Center. Standing on top of Mead Hill and looking out over the Horse Center, I saw that there was something remarkable here.
I hope those of you who have had the privilege of living here for a long time never get tired of that view, that scene and the magic that’s created when you’re here. For those who are visiting, I hope you get to experience that same feeling during your time here at the Virginia Horse Center.
Situated beneath Mead Hill on 600 acres in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Horse Center houses 19 show rings, a 4,000 seat coliseum, eight barns, cross country and combined driving courses, campgrounds, special events spaces and more. Within those facilities, we are proud to host top-of-the-line horse shows and events for competitors of all ages and experience.
We continually strive to serve as one of the nation’s leading equestrian facilities, attracting world-class local, national and international competitions. Over the course of the past year, the Virginia Horse Center has undergone significant positive changes, propelling us further along in this mission every day.
Our Horse Center is becoming much more than just a place to bring your horse to show. The magic that I felt the first time that I stood on Mead Hill and looked out over the Virginia Horse Center is very much alive, and we’re looking forward to the bright future ahead. Thanks for joining us on the ride to get there! We hope you enjoy your time here in beautiful Lexington, Virginia.
